Genie Origin

Find where your family began.

A free, friendly guide to tracing your roots using official records – plus plain-English help on whether your family history could make you a citizen.

Start with Ireland Where might I fit?

We’re an independent website, not a government service. We link you to the official sources and never tell you that you definitely qualify.

What Genie Origin does

  • Free roots search hub

We gather the free official record websites in one place and show you how to use them. We link out to them – we don’t copy or sell their data.

  • Citizenship by descent, explained

Plain-English guides to how a parent or grandparent can open a path to citizenship, always linked to the official page.

  • Surname and place stories

Where your surname comes from and what it’s linked to – told honestly, with our sources and any doubts marked.

  • Coming later: a step-by-step pathway tool

A personalised checklist and tracker to help you gather the right records for your application. It’s planned at €90, one-time. It isn’t available yet and we don’t take pre-orders – join the waitlist to hear when it is.

It’s free. We’ll email you when new tools open for your country – and nothing else. Your answers help us decide what to build first.

This just helps us decide which country guides to write next. Skip it if you prefer.

Are you planning to apply for citizenship by descent in the next 12 months? (optional)

Please don’t include passport, PPS, social security or any ID numbers.

There’s nothing to pay. We don’t take payments or pre-orders.

The honest bit

  • Only the official authorities can decide if you’re a citizen. We’ll tell you which route you appear to fit and send you to the official page to confirm.
  • Fees, waiting times and rules change – the official page always wins.
  • We’ll never ask for passport, ID or social security numbers, or copies of documents.
  • We can’t speed up applications and we never submit them for you.
